Accoustical Engineered Enclosures
It took a brief hiatus, but now it’s back and more beastly than ever. The latest iteration was developed in response to the recent explosion in ultra-low-frequency music. These subwoofers were designed to provide long-term power handling, with accuracy, and high excursion capabilities. It’s been optimized for a 1500 – 2500 watt power band with the ability able to handle bursts of up to 10,000 watts. It boasts 3 inches of magnet cross-section, over a 10″ OD, and weighs in at 70 pounds (motor only). The traditionally tight DD magnet gap drives a 4″ flat wound aluminum voice coil to a peak excursion in excess of 3 inches while keeping enough turns in the gap to maintain power and control.

All of this technology drives a cone made from a combination of pulp and carbon fiber, which is also supported by a special V-ROM design foam surround. The surround is built with the same profile as DD Audio’s Extended Range of Motion (EROM) surrounds, but with flex ribs that allow it to retain its strength and shape even at the extremes of excursion.

To further compliment the Z’s striking motor cosmetics the aluminum quick-change top plate, and shorting ring both feature red anodized accents. You’ll notice the standard TS parameters are missing for the Z subs. This omission is on purpose because each Z is custom built to order allowing for Zillions of possible parameter sets making one static set of specs very prone to inaccuracy. The reason we build Zs custom to order is it gives a system designer the utmost freedom to design for their specific application. The Z Series subs also feature our Evolution Subwoofer Package (ESP).
Due to its open motor structure, the Z series experiences an increased benefit from cooling channels machined into the pole piece, resulting in a higher volume of airflow redirected to the voice coil. The pillars surrounding the pole have been extended to allow for increased excursion and longer coil windings. The magnetic configuration changed slightly to make use of the very high iron content steel to increase the flux energy that crosses the gap. The 1100 Series subs are designed to be highly efficient and sound amazing. Our sample is the 3510-ESP, a 10-inch subwoofer built on a rugged cast aluminum basket and powered by a huge triple-stacked 170-mm motor. The woofer tips the scales at right around 37 pounds, so you know this is a serious 10-inch driver as soon as you pick it up! The 3510’s magnetic energy is focused around a pair of three-inch, four-layer copper voice coils. The coils are coated with an ultra-high-temperature capable varnish, and wound on a special former composed of several different materials. All of this engineering is designed to result in excellent heat transfer, and allow really high power handling without failures. Furthermore, the former is double-slit to reduce inductance, and there are vent holes placed above the coil windings to increase airflow and improve coil cooling.
The Z4 is for pros who know how to take advantage of the higher energy and improved handling. Everything but the frame has been upgraded to further eliminate loss of energy, better manage magnetic field distortion, and improve stress handling. Sealed Enclosures
In the supplied vented enclosure, the performance of the 3510-ESP certainly did not disappoint. The very bottom of the audible register was very low, allowing me to easily hear the very subdued kick drum in Livingston Taylor’s Grandma’s Hands. This is a listening test I perform frequently, as a good many woofers do not reproduce these extremely low frequencies at audible levels. Dire Straits’ Heavy Fuel and Marc Cohen’s Walking in Memphis were excellent, with tight transients and correct timbre. Most sealed enclosures are best for sound quality and limited space applications. The subwoofer, depending on specific variables, may tend to play much tighter and more accurately then a typical vented enclosure.
The ESP-equipped subwoofer has a larger suspension diameter than a standard woofer, as well as a deeper basket and specially optimized surrounds for greater excursion and enhanced reliability.
